Keep the pavement clear of snow over the width required for pedestrians, at least 1.20 m. Where carriageway and pavement are not separated (e.g. a play street), keep or grit a strip at least 1.20 m wide at the edges of the road. At public transport and school bus stops, keep the pavement clear of snow and grit it when icy so that boarding, alighting and access are safe.
Salt or other de-icing substances are not permitted, except in specially justified exceptional weather conditions such as freezing rain where abrasive grit is not sufficiently effective, or at hazardous spots such as steps, ramps, bridge access ramps and steep slopes. Tree pits and planted areas must not be gritted with salt or de-icing materials.
