Grit the full width of the pavement with sand, chippings or other suitable gritting material, repeated as needed. Salt and chemical de-icers only in black ice or freezing rain.

Clear pavements and crossings wide enough that traffic is not obstructed more than unavoidable; in icy conditions grit pavements across their full width and depth. Clear an access at least 1.25 m wide to the road and to the property entrance.
Grit mainly with sand, chippings and similar material. Salt only in small amounts at particular danger spots such as steps or steep pavements, and against compacted ice and snow residues.
