Bochum
Snow and ice arising between 7 am and 8 pm must be removed immediately once the snowfall stops or the ice forms. Snow falling after 8 pm must be removed by 8 am the next day.
Keep pavements clear of snow over the width needed by pedestrians, at least one metre, and grit the same width when icy. Where there is no pavement, no separation between pavement and road, or in pedestrian streets, keep a strip at least one metre wide along the properties free of snow and ice.
Salt and other environmentally harmful de-icers are banned on pavements in principle; they are only allowed at dangerous spots (e.g. steps, passages, bridge ramps, steep slopes) or in exceptional weather (e.g. freezing rain) where abrasive grit alone is not enough. Do not put salt on tree pits and planted areas or pile snow containing salt on them.
The street register sets out the duties: for streets marked A the carriageway and pavement, for B, C and D the pavements, otherwise winter maintenance of the pavements. Breaches can be fined up to €500.
The town's bylaw is authoritative: Street cleaning and fees bylaw of 22 December 1981, as amended by the 43rd amending bylaw of 23 December 2025
